Labor Priorities

Labor wants affordable housing choices,
improved community facilities,
and action on climate change.

The Labor team will support local government in helping Eurobodalla people live in proper housing, providing safe and accessible community amenities and services, and safeguarding for the future our beautiful coastal environment and averting the worst impacts of climate change.

We believe the Eurobodalla Shire Council is not being proactive enough about supporting our community, and it could do so much more if it had Labor Councillors and a Labor Mayor.

Our candidates are proud to be standing in this election representing Labor values and policies around equity, fairness, and having a Council active in improving people’s lives.

Better Housing Options

Labor polices offer more choice, affordability, accessibility and environmental protection.

PRIORITY POLICIES

Labor will:

  • prioritise investment into a diverse mix of housing types to reflect community need,

  • adopt an active Affordable Housing Strategy, drawing on the Bega Valley Shire Council model, and employ a housing manager to focus on implementing the strategy,

  • advocate for an increase in social housing,

  • reform Council Planning to provide for the mix of housing types we need,

  • provide incentives to ensure more long-term rentals,

  • encourage partnerships to build housing on Council land.

Improved Community Facilities & Services

While Council’s ability to fund more extensive community services is limited by the financial drag created by the Bay Pavilions, it should do more to create spaces for people to get together. It should do more to ensure that people with a disability can move about the region, and it should do more to ensure safe facilities for pedestrians.

Climate Response

Labor knows climate change is real and we must prepare ourselves. In recent years the Eurobodalla region has had direct experience of the impact of climate change, with devastating bushfires, flooding, heat waves, and coastal erosion. While Council has a Climate Action Plan, it does not include some practical steps Council could take to improve resilience.

PRIORITY POLICIES

Labor will:

  • Make the Climate Action Plan work, by carrying out annual public reviews of progress against the Plan and addressing shortcomings (read more).
  • Ensure widespread availability of heat havens for use during heatwaves.

  • Support bushfire readiness by ensuring residents can dispose of green waste at no charge all year round (read more).

  • Get involved in improving the availability of electric vehicle charging stations.
